What to Bring to the Secret Lagoon

What to bring to the Secret Lagoon: a swimsuit and towel (or rent each for 1,200 ISK), no silver jewellery. Showers, lockers, the shower rule and the café.

Updated November 2026

Bring a swimsuit and a towel; if you forget either, the Secret Lagoon rents each for 1,200 ISK (November 2026). Soap, shampoo, lockers and hair dryers are provided. Leave silver jewellery behind, because the sulphur in the water can discolour it, and expect to shower without a swimsuit before going in: it is the house rule. Tours that include entry usually leave the towel to you, as Gateway to Iceland’s From Reykjavik: Golden Circle & Secret Lagoon Guided Tour does, from $159 a person (checked November 2026).

The changing rooms are indoors, with lockers and keys, and the showers are separate for men and women and communal, in the Icelandic way, with no private cubicles and no family room. Showering without a swimsuit before you enter the pool is mandatory: no chemicals are added to the water, and the lagoon calls skipping the shower disrespectful. Take your towel to the showers and dry off before walking back into the changing room; shoes come off before you enter it.

At the pool

The Secret Lagoon (Gamla Laugin) beside the Hverahólmi hot springs, Hvammsvegur, 845 Flúðir.
  • The springs are not for bathing. They are close to boiling; keep to the path round the pool.
  • Children come with an adult, up to three for each adult; children aged 8 and under wear inflatable armbands.
  • No diving, jumping or running, no pets, and no alcohol brought in from outside.
  • Jewellery: take it off. Anything lost in the pool is hard to find in the deep gravel bottom, and silver can change colour in the sulphur. The water does not harm hair, the lagoon says, once it has been washed in the shower first.
  • Stay hydrated, and take breaks from the 38 to 40 °C water.

The café sells hot, soft and alcoholic drinks, snacks, cup noodles and sandwiches, with ice cream or hot dogs in season; there is no kitchen for hot meals. Tour days stop elsewhere for food too: Gateway to Iceland’s day makes stops where food and drinks can be bought.
